The Casey Butt calculator: the formula behind your natural ceiling

Ever wondered how much muscle you could build naturally — your true genetic ceiling? The Casey Butt calculator puts a number on it, predicting your maximum natural muscular potential from your height, wrist size, and ankle size. It’s the most-cited genetic-ceiling model out there.

Where the model comes from

Casey Butt analyzed the physiques of natural bodybuilders and reverse-engineered the relationships between their bone structure and their maximum lean muscular development. The result, published in Your Muscular Potential, is a set of equations that estimate your maximum lean body mass and the maximum “ripped” circumferences for individual body parts.

The inputs are deliberately structural:

  • Height — the frame you’re filling out.
  • Wrist circumference — a proxy for upper-body bone thickness.
  • Ankle circumference — a proxy for lower-body bone thickness.
  • Body fat percentage — the condition you want the prediction at.

Why wrist and ankle? Because they’re mostly bone with little muscle or fat, so they don’t change much with training. That makes them a stable signal of your underlying skeletal size — and bigger bones support more muscle.

The formula, with a worked example

Here’s the core maximum lean body mass equation:

Max LBM (lb) = H^1.5 × (√W ÷ 22.667 + √A ÷ 17.010) × (%bf ÷ 224 + 1)

where H is height in inches, W is wrist circumference in inches (measured on the hand side of the wrist bone), A is ankle circumference in inches (at the smallest point), and %bf is the body fat percentage you want the estimate at.

Worked example — a 5’10” lifter with a 7” wrist and an 8.75” ankle, estimated at 10% body fat:

  • H^1.5 = 70^1.5 ≈ 585.7
  • √7 ÷ 22.667 ≈ 0.117, and √8.75 ÷ 17.010 ≈ 0.174 → sum ≈ 0.291
  • Body-fat term: 10 ÷ 224 + 1 ≈ 1.045
  • Max lean body mass ≈ 585.7 × 0.291 × 1.045 ≈ 178 lb

At 10% body fat that’s a maximum body weight of about 198 lb (178 ÷ 0.90). Rather than push symbols around by hand, run your own numbers in the maximum muscular potential calculator — it also computes the per-bodypart maximums (chest, arms, forearms, thighs, calves, neck).

How far to trust it

Three honest caveats keep people from misreading the output:

  • These are ceilings, not forecasts. The model describes the best drug-free bodybuilders in history. Hitting your numbers means training hard and smart for many years — realistically 5–10+ — and most lifters land somewhere below their theoretical max. That’s normal.
  • The output depends on the body fat you specify. The lean-mass number at contest condition is not your walk-around weight; off-season you’ll carry fat plus the water and glycogen that come with it.
  • It’s a population estimate, not destiny. Two people with identical wrists can end up in different places. Treat the output as a well-informed midpoint, not a promise or a limit carved in stone.

The value isn’t precision to the gram. It’s calibration. If the formula says your lean-mass ceiling is around 175 lb and you’re currently 150 lb at 15% body fat, you now know roughly how much room you have — and that changes how you plan bulks, cuts, and expectations.

A ceiling is a destination, not a plan

The calculator answers “how far?” It says nothing about “how fast” or “in what order” — and that gap is where most lifters spin their wheels, alternating aggressive bulks that add mostly fat with panicked cuts that erase hard-won muscle.
